Salford University

The University of Salford is regarded as one of the UK's leading enterprising universities. The University is currently undertaking a process of transformational change. As part of this change they are investing heavily in the development of their campus IT infrastructure.

As part of its growth and investment The University had a number of requirements for world class, redundant and scalable 3 phase power protection. Availability was critical for the equipment being supported, so The University needed a trusted partner that could be relied upon to work with other contractors and suppliers to design, supply, implement and support solutions which meet their current and expected needs.

Datacentre UK have provided The University of Salford with a number of APC PX Symmetra Solutions located in different data centres around campus. The Symmetra PX is a true modular system made up of dedicated and redundant modules, power, intelligence, battery and bypass, all engineered into a design that is easily and efficiently serviceable. This architecture can scale power and runtime as demand grows or as higher levels of availability are required.

Blackpool Further Education College

Blackpool with a national reputation for innovation and excellence in learning is one of the largest Further Education Colleges in the UK and therefore had a particularly demanding requirement to provide a strategically flexible IT resource to support both FE and HE learning requirements. The College has embarked on a policy of green and sustainable procurement and therefore the purchase of such an energy intensive resource had to meet green objectives, particularly so as the new Central Hub building at the University Centre project is an award winning 'BREEAM excellent accredited' building.

Given the requirements that the capability of the new Data Centre was to respond to anticipated future new campus requirements. The solution needed to be flexible, have additional capacity available to pick up both expansion and shifts in the shape of the organisation whilst avoiding energy waste. N + 1 on UPS and cooling solutions were of course mandatory. The closely coupled HACS solution provided by Datacentre UK and by APC gave such a platform and in an integrated package that could adjust to the varying needs of the organisation. Spare capacity for additional UPS resource, the provision of an external generator and a chiller solution making the most of the UK climate were key. Access control and remote monitoring needed to bolt in to existing infrastructure which was easily achievable with the flexible Netbotz monitoring suite.

The facility has both server and data communications cabinets supported by a UPS and cooling solution which is scalable to 40kW N+1, allowing rack densities of up to 14kW in any single cabinet. The UPS is currently operating at 20kW N+1. The facility utilises hot aisle containment with in row close coupled cooling and chilled water supplied by two 40kW Free Cooling chillers configured as N+1 with an auto changeover panel. The project completed 1 week ahead of schedule allowing the College to begin early deployment of new systems.

Autonet Insurance

Autonet Insurance are one of the country's largest independently owned insurance brokers. As an existing customer of Datacentre UK, we were their provider of choice when the time came for them to move to their new purpose built head office.

Autonet's existing infrastructure and planned new high-density server environment required a scaleable, reliable and energy efficient solution that could be delivered on time working along side the building contractors onsite who would be responsible for delivering some of the required services.

Datacentre uk designed and delivered one of the country's first HACS (Hot Aisle Containment System) solutions utilising In-Row DX based cooling. As rack densities increase, HACS solutions prevent hot and cold air streams mixing, thereby increasing efficiencies and reducing energy usage
